People who are calcium deficient can have difficulty falling asleep. Also, some people with low calcium levels experience muscle cramps at night, which can occur even without any significant physical exertion during the day. Calcium has a sedative effect on the body. A calcium deficiency can cause restlessness and wakefulness.
People with a magnesium deficiency may fall asleep easily but only experience a relatively short period of deep, restful sleep. If you are magnesium deficient, you can be trapped in light, non-rejuvenating sleep, tossing and turning throughout the night. When this happens, you wake up exhausted. Also, a magnesium deficiency can cause nervousness that prevents sleep. When you are under stress, you use up a lot of magnesium and B vitamins (see Vitamin B complex), creating a shortage, which contributes to insomnia. Magnesium citrate is a form of this mineral that has been found to be easily absorbed.
